Where it is

The mosque stands in Juffair, on the eastern side of Manama, close to main roads and easily reached by taxi. Its dome is visible from a distance and is one of the most recognisable shapes on the city skyline.

The building

Completed in 1988, the mosque is one of the largest in the region, with a vast prayer hall beneath a great dome. Visitors usually notice the craftsmanship first: marble floors, carved wooden doors, patterned glass and calligraphy around the interior. The building draws on materials and skills from many countries, which gives it a rich mix of decorative traditions.

Visiting with respect

The mosque is first and foremost a place of worship. It has been known for welcoming non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times, often with guides who explain the building and answer questions about Islamic practice. Arrangements can change, so confirm current visiting times before you go and avoid Friday midday prayers and religious holidays unless you know visits are possible.

Dress modestly: long trousers or skirts and covered shoulders for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Suitable cover-ups have often been available at the entrance. Shoes are removed before entering the prayer areas. Speak quietly, do not walk in front of anyone who is praying, and ask before photographing people.

Visitor notes

Plan around thirty to sixty minutes. The mosque pairs well with the National Museum and the waterfront on the same day. If guided visits are running, they are one of the most direct ways for visitors to learn about local customs from the people who practise them.

Nearby

Juffair is a busy residential and hotel district, and the mosque is a short taxi ride from the Manama waterfront, the National Museum and the old market. Visitors often combine a respectful visit here with an afternoon in the museum galleries, which add historical context to the customs explained by guides.
